Frequently Asked Questions

Tap any question to view the answer.

What is the NSW RSA course?

The NSW RSA course is mandatory training approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW that teaches responsible service of alcohol practices. Once deemed competent (typically within 24–48 hours during business hours), you receive your interim certificate and SITHFAB021 Statement of Attainment. You then obtain your NSW Competency Card from Service NSW for full 5-year validity. Accepted by all employers in NSW and across Australia.

When must I complete my RSA in New South Wales?

In NSW, you must hold a valid RSA competency before you can be employed in any role that involves selling, serving or supplying alcohol — including roles in licensed venues, bottle shops, crowd control and alcohol delivery. Liquor & Gaming NSW enforces this requirement strictly across all paid staff and volunteers in licensed premises.

How often do I need to renew my NSW RSA competency?

Your NSW RSA competency is valid for 5 years on your NSW Competency Card under the Liquor Act 2007 (NSW). Before expiry, you can renew through Service NSW. If your competency expires, you may need to redo the RSA Bridging or full course depending on lapse duration.

Does the NSW RSA apply to alcohol delivery drivers and crowd controllers?

Yes. NSW law specifically requires RSA competency for: (1) alcohol delivery drivers transporting liquor for licensed retailers, restaurants and online services; and (2) crowd controllers and security personnel working at licensed venues. Liquor & Gaming NSW enforces RSA requirements across all alcohol-adjacent roles.

Is Job Trainer Australia approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW?

Yes. Job Trainer Australia (RTO 45742) is on the official Liquor & Gaming NSW Approved Training Provider register for New South Wales. Once deemed competent, you receive your interim certificate and SITHFAB021 Statement of Attainment, then obtain your NSW Competency Card from Service NSW for 5-year validity. Verify our approval on the official L&G NSW register, or verify our RTO on training.gov.au.

How long does the RSA NSW course take?

The RSA NSW online course takes approximately 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace. It is entirely self-paced — start, pause and resume whenever it suits you. Your progress saves automatically.

How long do I have to complete the course?

You have 3 months from the date of enrolment. We will remind you by SMS and email 7 days before your access ends. If your course is deactivated, call 1300 020 615 and we will reactivate it at no cost on one occasion — either a further 3 months on the same unit, or enrolment in the current version if the unit has been updated. No refund applies to courses not completed within the access period.

How much does the RSA NSW course cost?

The RSA NSW course is $142.00 total — this includes your training, assessment, nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and the $107.00 Liquor & Gaming NSW competency card fee. There are no hidden fees: the $142.00 covers everything required to obtain your certificate and card.

When will I receive my RSA NSW certificate?

Once a qualified assessor has deemed you competent, your interim certificate and SITHFAB021 Statement of Attainment are emailed to you and available in your student portal — typically within 24–48 hours during business hours. Submissions made after hours are assessed the next business day. Your interim certificate is valid for 90 days and lets you start work in NSW straight away. Take it to a Service NSW centre for a 100-point ID check to obtain your NSW Competency Card; your card number is issued on the spot and the physical card is posted (allow up to one month).

I have an interstate RSA — do I need to redo the full course for NSW?

No. If you hold a current RSA Statement of Attainment from another Australian state or territory, you can complete the shorter NSW RSA Bridging course instead of the full course. The Bridging course covers NSW-specific liquor laws and converts your existing RSA to a NSW Competency Card. Contact our team to enrol in the Bridging course.

Do I need a USI to enrol?

Yes. A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for all nationally recognised courses in Australia. You can create one for free at usi.gov.au in just minutes. International students studying from outside Australia may be exempt — our student services team can help.

Can I use my interstate RSA in NSW?

Interstate RSA Statements of Attainment cannot be used directly to work in NSW — you need a NSW Competency Card. However, holders of current interstate RSA certificates can complete our shorter NSW RSA Bridging course (instead of the full course) to obtain their NSW Competency Card. The Bridging course covers NSW-specific liquor laws.

Which RSA NSW Course Do I Need?

Choosing the right RSA NSW course depends on your current certification status. New workers who have never held an RSA certificate must complete the full RSA NSW course. Those with expiring NSW competency cards only need the refresher course, while interstate certificate holders can complete the bridging course. Job Trainer Australia offers all three options 100% online.

RSA Certificate Required Before Starting Work

Under NSW liquor laws enforced by Liquor & Gaming NSW, you cannot legally sell, serve, or supply alcohol without a valid RSA certificate. This applies to all hospitality workers including bartenders, waitstaff, bottle shop attendants, crowd controllers, and same-day alcohol delivery drivers. Your certificate must be provided to your employer before your first shift.

RSA NSW Refresher vs Full Course vs Bridging

The full RSA NSW course is for first-time learners. The RSA refresher course is for NSW workers renewing their expiring competency card. The RSA bridging course is designed for workers who hold a valid RSA certificate from another Australian state and need to work in New South Wales. All courses are nationally recognised and approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW.

Course Structure: Learners advance through five (5) online modules at their own pace. Each module provides instructional content, support documents, streaming video, and resources required for assessment.

Access to all course components is granted after successful enrolment. A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) must be provided prior to certificate issuance.

Assessment Components

Each module features a quiz to reinforce key concepts. All questions must be answered correctly to progress to subsequent modules. Up to three attempts are allowed per quiz before temporary course access is paused.

Written response questions must be answered to meet assessment standards. These questions test your understanding of NSW liquor laws, responsible service protocols, and duty of care obligations.

Real-life scenarios challenge you to respond as you would in a licensed setting. You'll demonstrate your ability to handle situations involving intoxicated patrons, ID checking, service refusal, and conflict resolution.

Identity Verification: Record a short video showing your government-issued photo ID, clearly stating your full name and birthdate.

Practical Demonstration: Demonstrate in a role-play scenario, using Job Trainer Australia's simulated assessment and frontline environment, S.A.F.E BAR™, to evidence industry skills such as refusing service, escalating issues to management, and seeking assistance.

Where minor gaps remain, a brief verbal discussion may be organised to confirm understanding. This ensures you have a complete grasp of all competency requirements before certification.

Assessor Review and Course Completion

Your trainer/assessor will evaluate your submissions and provide detailed feedback if revisions are required. Please carefully read all recommendations and use them to update your work.

Whether you're aiming for a role as a bar attendant, hotel staff, restaurant server, or club supervisor, your NSW RSA competency card is the essential first step in your hospitality career pathway.

NSW RSA Competency Card for Hospitality Careers

An NSW RSA competency card is mandatory under NSW liquor laws for anyone working in the hospitality industry where alcohol is sold, served or supplied. Job Trainer Australia is a Liquor & Gaming NSW Approved Training Provider, delivering RSA training that meets all NSW regulatory requirements and qualifies you to work in bars, restaurants, hotels, clubs and licensed venues across New South Wales.

Career Opportunities Across NSW

Your NSW RSA competency card opens the door to numerous hospitality career opportunities across New South Wales including bar attendant, bartender, restaurant server, hotel staff, club supervisor, security and crowd control, retail liquor salesperson, winery and brewery staff, promotional staff, RSA marshal and event staff. It's also the essential foundation for advancing to manager or licensee positions.

Refresher Course and 5-Year Validity

Your NSW RSA competency card is valid for 5 years. Before it expires, you can complete a quick refresher course (60-90 minutes) to renew. If you let your card lapse for more than 5 years, you'll need to redo the full course. Liquor & Gaming NSW will notify you 90 days before your card expires — provided your contact details are up to date.
