Is my RSA certificate valid in every Australian state?

No. Each state sets its own rules. SITHFAB021 is generally accepted in QLD/WA/SA/TAS/NT/ACT. NSW and VIC require state-specific certs or bridging courses.

How long does an RSA certificate last in Australia?

NSW: 5 years. VIC/NT/ACT: 3 years (refresher required). QLD/WA/SA/TAS: no expiry (refresh every 3 yrs recommended).

Is my overseas RSA recognised in Australia?

No. Overseas training is not recognised. Complete an Australian-accredited RSA (SITHFAB021) — online before arrival is fine.

Do I need a USI for RSA training?

USI is free and mandatory for nationally accredited training in Australia. Exempt only if studying 100% offshore as a non-citizen.

How long do I have to get my RSA after starting work?

It varies by state. NSW requires an RSA before you start. NT allows 7 days, Victoria one month and Tasmania up to 3 months. Other states allow a short grace period — confirm with your employer and the state regulator.

Western Australia has one of Australia’s simplest RSA frameworks — no government competency card, no bridging course, no expiry. Because you’re training 100% offshore as a non-citizen, you’re exempt from the Unique Student Identifier (USI) and can enrol immediately. Your certificate is nationally recognised and you can start serving alcohol the moment you arrive.

Please note: where a USI exemption applies, training results will not appear on the national VET transcript.

Why WA RSA?

Western Australia's RSA requirements are among the simplest in Australia. No competency card to apply for, no mandatory bridging, and certificates don't expire. For offshore non-citizens (cabin crew, backpackers, working-holiday visa holders), it's the cleanest entry point to working in Australian hospitality.

Planning on travelling to other states later? Your SITHFAB021 Statement of Attainment can be used in all states and territories, including NSW and Victoria. Victoria requires the free online LCV bridging course. NSW requires no further training (no bridging) if you are only visiting temporarily and you:
• don't live permanently in NSW
• hold an approved RSA certification from another state or territory that is less than 5 years old
• can show evidence of your certificate/training when required, and
• understand your obligations under NSW liquor laws.
