How the NSW Competency Card Works
In NSW, RSA graduates receive a photo Competency Card. The card is issued by Liquor & Gaming NSW and shows your name, photo and endorsements (for example RSA). You must have a valid card — or a current interim certificate — before you sell, serve or supply alcohol in NSW.
The card has a physical version and a free digital version in the Service NSW app. Your employer can ask to see either.
Step by Step: From Course to Card
1
Complete your NSW RSA with an approved training provider
Only providers approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW can deliver NSW RSA. Job Trainer Australia (RTO 45742) is an approved provider — see the NSW RSA course.
2
Receive your interim certificate
Once a qualified assessor deems you competent, your provider issues an interim certificate. It lets you work for 90 days while your card is produced.
3
Visit Service NSW within 90 days
Bring your interim certificate and 100 points of original identification. Service NSW takes your photo and processes your card details.
4
Download your digital card
Your digital card is available in the Service NSW app shortly after your photo is taken. It's free.
5
Receive your physical card
The physical card is posted to you. Liquor & Gaming NSW says processing can take up to 5 weeks, so keep your interim certificate handy until it arrives.
What It Costs — and Why NSW RSA Costs More
NSW RSA courses cost more than other states because the price includes a government fee for your Competency Card. With Job Trainer Australia, NSW RSA is $143 in total:
| Item | Amount |
|---|
| Liquor & Gaming NSW government fee (Competency Card) | $107 |
| Job Trainer Australia training and assessment | $36 |
| Total NSW RSA with JTA | $143 |
Take the government fee out and the training itself is just $36 — lower than our $58 national RSA price. See our full RSA course cost guide.
Renewing Your Card
NSW Competency Cards are valid for 5 years. Before your card expires, complete the required refresher training and pay the renewal fee through Liquor & Gaming NSW (currently listed as $50). If your card expires, you cannot sell, serve or supply alcohol. A 28-day grace period only applies if you completed proof of identity with Service NSW before your card expired. More detail in our RSA renewal guide.
Moving to NSW From Another State?
If you've moved permanently to NSW and already hold an approved RSA from another state, you may be able to complete the NSW RSA bridging course instead of the full course. Liquor & Gaming NSW says you're eligible if your interstate RSA was issued within the last 5 years (QLD, WA, SA, TAS) or 3 years (VIC, ACT, NT). After the bridging course you apply for your card in person at Service NSW.
